I'm a linguist, specializing in sociolinguistics. My interests include language variation, with an emphasis on the role of the listener in variation; language and sexuality; language and the construction of masculinity; and the role of language in the formation and performance of identity.

My dissertation work was on the way that individual linguistic variables influence how people perceive other people. I specifically looked at how the impact of the (ING) is different for different speakers, particularly with respect to regional accent. My current research expands on that work, examining more explicitly cognitive questions about exactly how sociolinguistic variation is understood and where and how it connects to other social and linguistic mental processes.
