The data in these files primarily uses the font Phonetic, which is available for download here: there are a few cases where the SIL Doulos IPA93 font is used. Each of the document files has been saved with the fonts embedded; however, some computer-security type software may require you to enable some feature in order to download the document with the fonts (so if it requires you to enable downoading of TTF files, do so at least for these files). Font embedding may not work on your computer, in which case you will need to separately download and install the fonts.
The document files will work for Word under Windows, but not necessarily on a Mac (the character encodings are different on a Mac). However, there have been some reported successes under OS X. It seems that you can download and install the fonts and data files; then there is an additional step of "font substitution". Check that the fonts are installed: they should appear as "Phonetic Roman", "Phonetic Italic" and so on (4 fonts). Then make a font substitution within Word to substitute Phonetic Roman for Phonetic. It is possible that a future version of the data will be posted using Unicode. There have also been various reports of the files not displaying properly on Windows machines. Check that the font Phonetic is actually displayed and available on your system. As a test, the character 0162 should display as the lax front mid vowel, Modern Greek epsilon, which is the ¢ sign in Times New Roman.
