Take-home lab exercies 1 on "Major class features"

Ling 600.01 Phonetic Theory

We will do this take-home lab exercise during the first two weeks of the quarter and the final report will be due at 1:00 on the day before the second class meeting of Week 2 (or at the beginning of that class if you don't care for feedback). The final report on in-class lab #1 (on "Basic Acoustics") should be included as an appendix to the report on this take-home lab exercise.

The instructions for this exercise are in Chapter 3 of the textbook A Laboratory Course in Phonology and it is available through a web page of chapters that have been extracted for this course.

Note that the chapter of the textbook that provides the instructions refer to a set of 40 wav files, all of which would be assigned to you to annotate if you did this exercise as part of Ling 600.02 "Laboratory Phonology" (the successor course to this one). For the purpose of this exercise for Ling 600.01, however, you will be asked to annotate only a subset of 10 files that have been put in a separate directory called wav_files_subset. The parent directory to that one contains other files that you might find useful, including a praat script that can be modified to read in all of the files that you are to annotate for this exercise.
