Ling 600.01 Phonetic Theory
We will do this lab in the second class meeting of Week 6. So prepare the first part of your report for that day. The final report on this lab should be submitted as an appendix to the field project report on your language consultant's obstruent contrasts (preliminary list).
You should be eliciting wordforms at this point that will make it possible for you to complete report 4 ("Obstruents -- preliminary list") and report 5 ("Complete consonant chart"). Organize the forms that you have elicited so for into the beginnings of the complete consonant chart, making sure that you have at least the row(s) for the language's fricative(s) filled in with your current understanding of what fricative(s) are in contrast with other obstruents (and with each other) in the language. Organize your questions about the transcriptions of the fricative(s) into a list with the most pressing ones at the top. Bring to class a brief write-up of the two or three questions at the top your list, along with recordings of wordforms that you think might help you answer these questions. Try to formulate specific questions about how looking at spectra taken from the middle of the fricative(s) and at F2 and F3 values at the beginning and/or end of adjacent vowel(s) might bear on these questions.
