Ling 600.01 Phonetic Theory
We will do this lab in class. You will listen to pairs of stimuli presented in class and judge the degree of similarity between the two stimuli in each pair. These judgments will be the basis for a multi-dimensonal scaling analysis that will be the data for take-home exercise 4. There is no preparation necessary for it. Instead you will need to turn in the responses that you made as an electronic file that we can collate with your classmates' responses to us in a multidimensional scaling analysis like the ones described in Chapter 4 and in Sections 6.6 and 7.5 of Johnson (2003). Your final report will be a short "Methods" section for your writeup of the Multi-Dimensional Scaling exercise.
In class: Get the audio files and the praat script to run the perception experiment from the MDSresults subdirectory of our class page. The files you want is sibilantMDS.zip.
