Ling 600.01 Phonetic Theory
We will do this lab in the second class meeting of Week 11. So prepare the first part of your report for that day. The final report on this lab should be submitted as an appendix to the field project report on your language consultant's complete set of consonant contrasts.
You should now be in the last stage of eliciting wordforms that will make it possible for you to complete report 5 ("Complete consonant chart"). Organize forms for more of the consonant chart, making sure that you now have all of the rows that you will need to list all of the language's consonants -- i.e., for sonorant consonants such as nasals, laterals, and central approximants as well as for the obstruents. Update the rows for the obstruents with information that you have figured out since Lab 9 and also now fill in the row(s) justifying any claims about nasals, laterals, and other sonorant consonants. Also, if your language has any contrasts among obstruents with the same "primary articulation" gesture but different "secondary articulation" gesture, now would be a good time to add more columns to list forms justifying the claimed contrast(s). Organize your questions about the transcriptions of the sonorant type contrasts into a list with the most pressing ones at the top. Bring to class a brief write-up of the two or three questions at the top your list, along with recordings of wordforms that you think might help you answer these questions. Try to formulate specific questions about what your transcriptions predict about differences in formant transition patterns and the like.
