Lab assignment 1 on "Basic acoustics"

Ling 600.01 Phonetic Theory

We will do this lab in the first class meeting of Week 2. So prepare the first part of your report for that day. The final report on this lab should be submitted as an appendix to the report on take-home exercise 1 on "Major classes".

Think of (at least) four sounds that you would like to see as a waveform or as a spectrogram. Some of these can be speech sounds (such as sustained fricatives or isolated vowels produced by yourself or by your language consultant) or they all might be non-speech sounds (such as whistles, avian calls, handclaps, violin notes, thunder). Whatever they are, they should include two sounds that (you think) are aperiodic and two that (you think) are periodic. One of the aperiodic sounds should be a sustained noise and another should be a transient noise. Also, one of the periodic sounds should be a simple one and the other complex. Find or make a recording of each of the types of sounds, and bring a CD or diskette with the digitized audio files or put the digitized audio files someplace where you can download them off the internet (e.g., in a directory under your home page).
