SOME PRAAT QUESTIONS: We made a directory that includes praat scripts that we are writing or will write. It is now linked into the course web page at the bottom. Or point your browser directly at the URL: http://ling.osu.edu/~mbeckman/795Tsu2004/praatScripts We wrote a script loadAllWav.praat that loads all of the files with the extension '.wav' in any particular directoy. We showed about how to modify the script to specify other directories and to specify other extensions (including all extensions). We wrote a script that Junko or Helen might use to build a TextGrid file for M-ToBI (Pan Mandarin ToBI) labeling, and showed how to add this as a button command to the "New" pull- down menu. There are notes on this in the script itself, which is MToBI_TextGrid.praat in the praatScripts directory. We wrote a script that Junko or Helen might use to insert the stress level tag for any syllable. See insertMstress.praat in the praatScripts directory. Lisa Rochman asks ... Subject: a few questions Date: Thu, 08 Jul 2004 19:47:16 -0500 A basic question- Is there a way to 'lighten' a dark spectrogram? I have a few technical questions about what I am seeing in some sound files. All the files are in my home drive. 1) In the "Hebrew folder' #17 what causes the steep drop at the end, is it a problem with the F0 tracker? I have encountered it in 3 Hebrew files (from 2 different speakers). 2) In the 'SBC Folder' sound "sbc disk10004 783" what is the early peak spike, and, I have never seen such a narrow peak. 3) In the folder 'Elisabeth English' in the folder 'contrastive' #7, should the peak over 'the' be indicated as a '>' because it sounds as if the accent is actually over the 'all'. -I am writing these questions from memory so I hope my memory is serving my correctly. ----------------------------------------------------------- SOME OF THE STUDENT'S FILES WE LOOKED AT IN CLASS: Helen Riha's extracts from a fluent amateur reading versus a professional reading of a Mandarin short story are on her web page at: http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/~riha/ and the text of the part we looked at in class is: zhe51 ji21 tian55 xin55li21 po55 bu51 ning35jing51 these few days heart very not peaceful "These last few days, my heart has been very restless." NOTES ON PRACTICE SIX EASY ------------------------------------------------------------- <> The break indices analysis that the "Guidelines ... " developers made for this utterance was: Uh, and then I go under a footbridge and into the park. 2p 1 1 1 2p 1 1 3 1 1 1 4 and the target breaks are of course the two "2p" tags ------------------------------------------------------------- <> The target here is the "2p" after "have", but there should also perhaps be a "%r" on the tones tier after this. Let's talk about this in class. Anouschka noted the error in the transcription of the second pitch accent in the phrase after the %r -- it should be L+!H* not !L+H* Ms. tobi will fix this on the ame_tobi page ------------------------------------------------------------- <> Contrast the fluent "2" that sets off the emphasized "to" to the disfluent "2p" cases in the other two utterances in this set.
