Method for Transcription 1. Save files from http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/~mbeckman/825sp2005/Exercise1/ 2. Open the files in Praat. 3. Create TextGrids for the files. Each TextGrid should have two interval tiers, the first labelled "WorldBet.initials" and the second labelled "notes.initials" (e.g. WorldBet.MB, etc.). NB: There's a template for a Praat script that will open all the files in a directory and create TextGrids for them on my webpage at www.ling.osu.edu/~kchall/Acquisition ("open_create_textgrids.praat"). You can modify this to specify the file directory and the type of TextGrids you want. 4. To show frequencies relevant to fricatives, change the spectrogram settings (under "Spectrum") -- e.g. allow the frequency range to go up to 11,000 HZ; you might want to try a narrower window length (e.g. 0.003 s) and try reducing the Dynamic Range to lessen the background noise (e.g. to 45 or 50 dB). 5. Delimit the fricative on the two tiers. 6. Use the WorldBet ASCII symbols for the transcriptions. These are listed at http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/~mbeckman/825sp2005/WorldBet/ 7. Transcribe the initial fricative and add any notes you have about the transcription.
