I am currently engaged in research on the phonetic realization of metrical structure in orally produced poetry in several languages.

Brief Biography

I was born on January 31, 1922 in Tallinn, Estonia. I came to the United States in l949 after receiving a Doctor of Philology degree from the University of Hamburg. I received a Ph. D. in linguistics from the University of Michigan in l959 and have received a D. Univ. (hon.) from Essex University, England, l977, a Dr. Phil. (hon.) from the University of Lund, Sweden, l982, and a Dr. Phil. (hon.) from the Tartu University, Estonia, l989. I am the author of 11 books, the latest being Lectures on Language Contact, MIT Press, l988, 176 articles in professional journals, and 101 reviews.
