I am a Ph.D. student here in the Linguistics
Department at the Ohio State University.
I have a broad range of interests which covers not only various linguistic
aspects of the English language in all periods but also their theoretical
and practical applications to other areas of English studies such as English
literature. My main areas of interest are English (historical) morphosyntax,
interaction between linguistics and literature, and syntax, semantics,
and pragmatics in general. So far, I have worked on various topics
in the morphology, syntax, and pragmatics of English from both synchronic
and diachronic standpoints.
My career goal is to make significant contributions to English linguistics
and grammar, thereby following the nonnative English scholarship exemplified
by such eminent scholars as Otto Jespersen (who wrote the monumental Modern
English Grammar on Historical Principles) and R. W. Zandvoort (who
founded the academic journal English
Studies, a leading journal in the field of English language and
literature).
I am a Christian who believes in Jesus Christ as my personal savior.
I am a member of the Korean
Church of Columbus. I am married to Hee-Johng Kim. We have
three lovely children, Brian (6 years), Michelle (4 years), and Joseph
(1 year). Here are some pictures of my happy family (forthcoming).
All my family and I love classical music and movies.
Current Projects
1. My Ph.D. dissertation on the synchrony and diachrony of the English
prepositional passive, which I am hoping to finish before the summer of
2000.
2. The semantics and pragmatics of the English tough-subject.
3. A lexicalist analysis of the prepositional passive in contemporary
English.
4. In addition to the above research projects, I am also developing
a course for the history of the English language, which is intend to inspire
and guide students to more actively and intellectually pursue their interest
in the development of the language through a journey full of many intriguing
but hard-to-handle questions in contemporary English and relevant diachronic
and sociolinguistic insights. If you are interested, here is my teaching
philosophy.
