Classes Taught

In the Linguistics Department at OSU, graduate students are given the opportunity to be the sole instructor of a departmental undergraduate course. Instructors are therefore expected to find or create lectures and other course materials, instruct and meet with students, and grade students' work and exams. The courses I have instructed are listed below:

Introduction to Language (Linguistics 201)

(Taught 5 times)

This course consists of a general survey of language and linguistics. A number of topics relating to man's knowledge and use of language are systematically investigated. The focus of the course is not on any specific language or languages; rather, it is on properties common to all languages and on ways in which languages may differ. Course topics include pragmatics, semantics, syntax, phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, and child language acquisition.

Language and Computers (Linguistics 384)

(Taught 3 times)

This course gives insight into the fundamentals of how computers are used to represent, process, and organize textual and spoken information, as well as providing tips on how to integrate this knowledge in to working practice. Course topics include text encoding, search technology, tools for writing support (i.e. spellign and grammar checkers), machine translation, dialog systems, computer aided language learning, and the social context of language technology.

Language and the Mind (Linguistics 371)

(Taught 5 times)

This course provides an introduction to psycholinguistics and to some of the important issues in the study of language processing and language acquisition. Course topics include audio and visual language processing of sounds, words, and sentences, child language acquisition, neurolinguistics, and the effects of culture on lanugage processing.
