This course provides an introduction to psycholinguistics and to some of the important issues in the study of language processing and language acquisition. Topics will include: How does the human mind process sounds, words, and sentences? How do children learn language? What is the biological basis for language?

Linguistics 201/202 (AU03, WI04, SP04, AU04, WI05)
The course consists of a general survey of language and
linguistics. A number of topics relating to man's knowledge and use of
language are systematically investigated. Examples are drawn primarily
from the English language, although other languages are used to
illustrate certain concepts. Nevertheless, the focus of the course is
not on any specific language or languages; rather, it is on properties
common to all languages and on ways in which languages may differ.
Linguistics 384 - Language and Computers (SP05,
SP07)
This course will give insight into the
fundamentals of how computers are used to represent, process, and
organize textual and spoken information, as well as providing tips
on how to get the best out of the technology. The course topics
will include text encoding, search technology,tools for writing
support, machine translation, dialog systems, computer aided
language learning, and the social context of language
technology.
