Department (Committee) Life
|
| Graduate students sit on many departmental and university committees,
getting a direct say in the running of the department. And besides the chance
to wield unchecked power, committee work looks pretty good on a vitae...
Some of the committees with graduate students are: |
| Council of Graduate Students (CGS)
| CGS represents all graduate students in the university. The department
receives either one or two representatives, depending upon the number of
linguistics students in residence at any given time. |
| Laboratory and Computing Committee (LCC)
| The LCC organizes tutorials on departmental computing resources and makes
decisions regarding the upkeep and purchase of computers and other equipment. |
| Ohio State Dissertations in Linguistics Committee (OSDL)
| OSDL ensures that all unpublished dissertations by Ohio State linguists
are available to the wider community through copying on-demand. |
| Research Requirement Committee
| This committee runs the linguistics department subject pool, participation
in which is required of all students in Ling 201/202 (Introduction to Language)
and Ling 371 (Language and the Mind). Any member of the Linguistics Department
can utilize the subject pool for their research. |
| Speakers Committee
| This committee is responsible for organizing departmental colloquia. Serving
on the Speakers Committee is an excellent chance for graduate students to
meet some of the most prominent linguists in the world. |
| Travel Committee
| The Travel Committee allocates (the ample) funds for graduate student
travel to conferences. |
| Working Papers Committee (OSUWPL)
| About once a year the department publishes a "Working Papers" volume of
papers by current department members. OSUWPL is responsible for the production
of the volume, giving graduate students valuable editorial experience. |
