Department Life

So you're looking for some life around here? Good idea - we have a band, plenty of sports teams, and a student linguistics association. Lots of ways to hang out with people who happen to be linguists ...

Music

The Remainders, a rock band with roots in Oxley Hall, played their first show for their friends in the department in October 2000. Playing a mixture of indie rock and retro pop, the Remainders can still be seen once a month or so playing in some bar on High Street. For the past year and a half, the The Remainders have been linguists Chad Howe, Grant McGuire, and Jeff Mielke, and ska legend Jason Packer. Former members include Steve Winters, Paul Davis, Patrick Arnold, Jenny Vannest, and Ken Bame. You can acquire a copy of The Remainders' debut album Halfway Between Then and Now or follow-up EP The Last One to Talk, or reserve a copy of the Remainder's forthcoming full-length CD by sending an e-mail to remaindersremaindersband.com , or you can check out mp3s online at www.remaindersband.com.

Food

Spanish Dinners What is the most common thing a linguistics student gets asked outside of the university? Right, "How many languages do you speak?". Instead of relying on the oft-repeated line "That's not really what linguistics is all about ..." we decided to take the opportunity to get back to our foreign language skills. Department Spanish speakers and friends, from beginners to advanced, meet once a month for some culturally appropriate cuisine at one of the many area Spanish or Latin American restaurants. We also enjoy some informal readings, special presentations and, most importantly, take advantage of the opportunity to speak la lengua divina. The contact person is Angelo Costanzo (costanzoling.ohio-state.edu). Let him know if you'd like to have your name added to the e-mail list in order to hear of upcoming events.

Athletics

Distinctive Features The Distinctive Features have been playing basketball as subdiscipline of linguistics and classics since 1979. ``Unfortunately'' the students on the team graduate ever so often, so that few of the current team members have benefited from all these years of training - but some are still around, like group contact Brian Joseph (bjosephling.ohio-state.edu), who solomonically remarks ``we are serious basketball players who can't afford to take ourselves too seriously''.

Running Speech Interested in running? Join Running Speech for Columbus road races! Most recently linguists and friends-of-linguists ran the Columbus Marathon Relay, sporting three teams - Onset, Nucleus and Coda (they even finished in the right order). Cheered on by extrasyllabic material (otherwise known as onlookers), two team members ran all 26.2 miles! For more information, contact Beth Hume (ehumeling.ohio-state.edu) or Pauline Welby (welbyling.ohio-state.edu).

Binary Feet No, this isn't a second running team - but you sure won't get around running if you join us for soccer. Contact Robin Dautricourt (rdautricling.ohio-state.edu) for more info.

Other

SLA (Student Linguistic Association) The SLA represents the interests and needs of the department's graduate students - basically covering everything not included by the other groups above. Just a few of the functions of the SLA include representing the graduate students at department meetings, electing graduate students to departmental and university committees and, most importantly, throwing parties. For more information about the SLA or about grad student life, contact SLA President Kathleen Hall (kchallling.ohio-state.edu).

Underlings (Undergraduate Linguistics Club) The Underlings is a club for undergraduate linguistics majors, minors or any other undergrads interested in linguistics. They meet several times a quarter, often with a speaker. They also host TongueFest every year. For more information, contact president Nadia El-Yousseph (el-yousseph.3ling.ohio-state.edu) or advisor Julie McGory (jmcgoryling.ohio-state.edu).

Columbus Last but not least, the city that never sleeps (at least some graduate students in it don't seem to get much sleep) with its endless activities for linguists and some other people. We plan to add some information on the gallery hop and other fun events here. In any case, the cowtown days are long gone with movies at the Drexel Gateway Theater in the South Campus Gateway, the Drexel Arena Grand Theater or the AMC Lennox Town Center 24 and performances from rock via classical to jazz almost every night in the Wexner Center, the Ohio Theatre, the Southern Theatre, a burgeoning Arena District downtown including the LC Pavilion which, along with Germain Amphitheater and OSU's own Schottenstein arena, is a stop on many national tours of bands and various performing groups, ... Students generally get amazing discounts, like free entry at the classical concerts Monday evening in Weigel Hall or $8 for any seat at the Columbus Symphony when you buy the tickets the evening of the show at the Ohio Theatre. On the sports side, Columbus is a major-league city with the Columbus Blue Jackets professional hockey team, the Columbus Crew major-league soccer team, as well as the Clippers AAA baseball team, and of course all the great sports here at OSU ... - way more than you'll ever have time for ;-)
