For a month starting 21 June, 2004, the Department of Linguistics at the Ohio State University will offer a unique combination of short courses aimed at exploring spoken language in context, with a focus on the phonology and pragmatics of prosody and on African-American English. Scholars, researchers (industry or academic), and students are invited to join us for an intense and rewarding summer session.
Dates: The summer 2004 session will be held from 21 June to 21 July.Format: The program will consist of a single, four-and-a-half week session. Each course will be held 2 hours per day, except Wednesdays which will be open for study, informal discussion, and special lectures. One of the courses (the Practicum in Intonation) will be taught in a computer-equipped multi-media classroom.
Fees: Credit registration through OSU or one of the CIC institutions is at the regular institutional fee (see the CIC Traveling Scholar Program). The non-credit registration fee is $1000 per course. Substantial scholarships are available. Please note: All of the courses have enrolment caps, intended to ensure the collegial atmosphere of the practicum and seminar format. For the Practicum in Intonation, this cap is fixed also to ensure that there is a computer for everyone in the classroom. The deadline to reserve a seat in the Practicum in Intonation course is 31 May 2004, and this is the deadline to pay the non-credit registration fee.
Location: All courses are held at the Ohio State University campus, Columbus, Ohio. Please note: Participants must make their own travel and housing arrangements. (The FAQs page lists some resources for looking for housing options.)
