684.02 Data Intensive Computational Linguistics U G 5
Prereq: 684.01 or other course in computational linguistics
This course has three main aims: familiarity with tools and techniques for handling text corpora, knowledge of the characteristics of some of the available corpora, and a secure grasp of the fundamentals of statistical natural language processing. Specific objectives include:
- understanding of the application of probability and information theory to computational linguistics.
- knowledge of fundamental techniques of probabilistic language modelling.
- experience of selected tools for data-intensive linguistics and awareness of principles of good tool design.
- knowledge of statistical approaches to representative language engineering tasks.
The course is the second part of the introductory sequence in computational linguistics. The normal pattern would be to take this the quarter after taking 684.01.
