622 Classical Sanskrit (Sanskrit II) U G 5
Prereq: 621 or permission of instructor

Reading of classical Sanskrit texts.

This course is a continuation of Sanskrit 621. However, it is primarily concerned with the interpretation of texts. The student is expected to prepare translations regularly, and to be able to discuss thoroughly the grammatical make-up of the texts translated. Some of the works from which selections will be read are the Hitopadesa, the Mahabharata, and the Kathasaritsagara. Discussion of aspects of Indic culture (art, religion, history, philosophy, etc.) serve to place the readings into their cultural setting. (In years when Vedic is not give as a separate course, selections from the RigVeda and from Brahmanic literature are also included, and the major features which differentiate the Vedic language from Classical Sanskrit are discussed.)
