621 Elementary Sanskrit (Sanskrit I) U G 5
Prereq: Not open to students with credit for Linguistics 621.

Introduction to Indo-European, Indic, and Sanskrit; reading of introductory texts.

This course is primarily concerned with an organized and thorough discussion of the grammatical system of Sanskrit and includes some reading of simple passages. It is also intended to incorporate an introduction to the more basic aspects of Indo-European grammar through the medium of the Sanskrit language. Such specifically Indic phenomena as Sanskrit sandhi, the Devanagari script, and nominal compounding are covered. However, many subjects receive considerable discussion from an Indo-European point of view, for example, the Sanskrit morphological and phonological systems as they reflect those of Indo-European, Sanskrit vowel gradation and its relationship to Indo-European ablaut, etc. This discussion not only gives the student a grounding in certain aspects of I-E grammar, but also affords a more systematic understanding of the Sanskrit grammar than can be gained from the simple memorization of paradigms.
