602.01 Syntactic Theory I U G 5
Prereq: 502, 601, or permission of the instructor.
Theories of syntax; principles of syntactic description.
This is the first in a two course sequence of two five-credit-hour lecture/discussion courses. 602.01 deals with the concepts of syntactic category and constituent; the goals of syntactic theory, and phenomena such as passive, raising, control, binding, unbounded dependencies, empty categories and syntactic constraints. The theoretical emphasis will be on the Principles and Parameters approach, with some comparison with alternative perspectives.
