The widening use of computers has had a profound influence on the way ordinary people work with information, but our interactions with computers are not yet as natural as we would like. The goal of Human Language Technology (HLT) is to bridge this gap. We'll go behind the scenes of internet search engines, automatic translators, e-mail filters, spell-checkers, and much more, to find out how people are using insights about language to make technology more convenient..

This course will give insight into the fundamentals of how computers are used to represent, process and organize textual and spoken information, as well as providing tips on how to get the best out of the technology. The course will Topics include text encoding, search technology,tools for writing support, machine translation, dialog systems, computer aided language learning and the social context of language technology.
