H201 Introduction to Language in the Humanities U 5
(GEC 5. Arts and Humanities - B. Analysis of Texts and Works of Art - 3. Cultures and Ideas)

An honors section of Linguistics 201. This section covers roughly the same topics as other sections of Linguistics 201, but selected topics will be examined in greater depth, with individual or small-group research projects involving those topics.

Spring 2005: The primary special small-group research project in this quarter's course will be the collection and analysis of language data obtained from a native speaker of the language. Another special topic will be the use of the Gullah creole language of South Carolina in the novel `Porgy' by Dubose Heyward, its subsequent modification in the stage version and then in the opera by George Gershwin, and the history of changing social attitudes toward the language of `Porgy and Bess' from 1935 to the present. Course requirements are: weekly or bi-weekly homework assignments, a mid-term examination, a final examination, and a final report on the language anaysis project.
