Teaching and Mentoring
I often teach one of three courses for OSU at the undergraduate level:
- "Language and Social Identity in the USA" (LING 372)
- "Language, Race, and Ethnicity" (LING/AFAM & AST 303)
- "Language, Gender, and Sexuality" (LING 367)
Each of these courses focuses on fostering an appreciation of regional, social, and ethnic dialect awareness and diversity among students. In 2010, I received an Undergraduate Teaching Award from the Department of Linguistics for exceptional teaching of these courses during the course of my time as an instructor at OSU. I have also taught "Introduction to Language in the Humanities" (LING 201), a general introduction to linguistics course, at the undergraduate level, but do so less frequently than the other classes I teach.
In addition, I am actively involved in mentoring undergraduate students via my involvement in the Department's Undergraduate Internship Program. Since 2005, I have mentored 8 undergraduates, 7 of whom have worked with me on my Century of Language Change in Columbus (CLCC) and Central Ohio Dialect Survey projects.
